Institute of Systems Motor Science (ISMS)
The Institute for Systems Motor Science (ISMS), at the Center for Brain, Behavior and Metabolism (CBBM),studies networks in the brain involved in the execution and control of movements, both in healthy subjects and in people with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, in order to better understand the brain as well as the disorders. Methodologically, we use psychophysical measurements, neurophysiological techniques, e.g. transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation (TMS), electroencephalography (EEG) and structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The ISMS cooperates closely with the Institute of Neurogenetics, the Department of Neurology, and the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in the areas of research, treatment of patients with rare neurological diseases and in the training of doctors. In addition, the links with the Institutes of Psychology, Human Genetics, Neuroradiology and the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy should be emphasised. In addition to numerous joint research projects, we offer interdisciplinary consultations for patients with a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases, for example movement disorders in adults and children such as dystonia, tics and Tourette's syndrome, Huntington's disease, ataxias and many other, often rare and partly hereditary diseases. This also results in a very close connection between the ISMS and the Centre for Rare Diseases section of the UKSH.
